Black Book #1

Black Book #1

In 2015 I acquired a large bound volume of The London Gazette, from a charity shop. It is not riveting on terms of content, but a fantastic A4-ish, 4/5 inches-deep volume. I always liked the idea of re-purposing books by overwriting content, so with this I colour the pages black the draw on them on white. I have started with a pseudo-self-portrait. The writing is a quote from V for Vendetta:  “There is a face beneath this mask, but it isn’t me. I’m no more that face than I am the muscles beneath it, or the bones beneath that,” followed by Twelfth Night: “Conceal me what I am, and be my aid. For such disguise as haply shall become the form of my intent.”
